Today’s complex, dynamic and challenging operational environments demand optimal performance. Peak performance in these environments requires a fit mind and body, able to remain agile and bounce back after stressful events. There is a profound parallel between physical fitness and mind fitness. Just as physical fitness can protect the body from physical injury, mind fitness can help create a “mental armor” to protect the mind. Just as physical fitness supports recovery from exertion, mind fitness supports recovery from stress. Just as a fit body has endurance, strength and flexibility, a fit mind has distinct capacities as well: mental agility, attention, emotional intelligence, and situational awareness. By creating greater integration between body and mind, mind fitness supports a resilient response to stress. By training attention, mind fitness supports situational awareness that draws on external and internal information. Together, these capacities enhance mental performance and complex decision-making in difficult circumstances. They also help individuals to respond effectively to challenges rather than react habitually in ways that may undermine objectives.
