A fit mind can support the body’s ability to self-regulate the effects of stress in the nervous system and return to optimal functioning.  The autonomic nervous system, which controls the “fight or flight” response, can become dysregulated during events that are perceived to threaten survival.  We may experience this dysregulation as being  “stuck on high” with symptoms like insomnia, hyperarousal, agitation, rage or panic, or “stuck on low” with symptoms like depression, exhaustion or numbness.  Mind fitness allows us to use focused attention to re-regulate the body and mind after an experience of extreme stress.  Such re-regulation helps the body and mind return to balance by completing the stress activation cycle.  Successfully completing the stress activation cycle after a period of stress is what actually builds resilience in the body.  Simply put, stressful experience followed by an effective recovery leads to resilience.
